Finding Common Ground
This may sound more like a country song than a substack post but just keep reading you will find out it is a true statement whether you are trying to resolve a conflict with your children, with your spouse, or with the neighbor, etc. Today we are talking about finding common ground in the political field we find ourselves in right now. Tensions are high between political parties and so many are staunchly sticking to their lane of preconceived notions and beliefs refusing to even have a reasonable debate with another individual.
What You Look for is What You Get
When I was assigned a location three years ago to be the election judge on election day, I did not realize the amazing number of things I had to learn and become aware off. That particular election was a general election so in the polling location we had a democrat team and a republican team so if the voter was a democrat, he or she went to the democrat team to check-in, etc and visa-versa. But I determined from the start that I was finding common ground between the two teams so that there would be harmony in the polling location on election day.
This was the common ground we all decided on — to get as many voters in to vote, make it a pleasant experience and as quick as possible. All eight of us poll workers worked together and even though we had some technical challenges that day with our equipment, we all, all eight of us, Democrat and Republican alike worked hard but did not have one conflict.
If I had gone in expecting “fight worthy” conflicts, disagreements and angry retorts, that is probably what I would have had that entire day. It is each person’s decision to choose finding common ground to connect with all the team members, family members but often one person has to set the course, guide the rudder to finding common ground to even connect nationally. Whichever it is, it should be our life’s mission to lead the charge to find common ground with all in our circumference of influence.
Challenging Our Personal Depth and Breath
Whenever you are in a situation where you need to find common ground, you will need to look deep and wide within yourself and comprehend the breath that you can stretch to without compromising yourself and your beliefs. You may be surprised how this increases your debating ability with someone who has differing beliefs personally and politically but a means to find common ground. There are important ties that bind us as Americans and those ties should never be fractured. Our Founding Fathers spent a great deal of time writing the Constitution and supporting documents to be sure Americans would be free for all the generations of the future. But we will lose that freedom unless fervently return to the search to find common ground with our fellow Americans.
